  • Enables management to identify poor driving styles and make informed decisions
  • Reduce fuel costs and improve driver safety
Driver behaviour analysis and in-cab alerts
What is The Driver Behaviour Monitoring System?
  • Management can utilise the reports to make informed decisions and improve driver behaviour, resulting in reduced fuel consumption and vehicle wear and tear
  • In-cab driver behaviour aids immediately improve driving styles by warning the driver with an audible buzzer when braking, accelerating or cornering too harshly
  • Driver league table showcases driver performance data and incentivises better driving

Reports are available on a desktop portal and drivers can check their own score in the CB Driver app. Driver behaviour is an optional add-on to the FleetTracker fleet vehicle tracking system.

What FleetTracker Driver Behaviour Monitors

The system scores every driver against five key performance indicators:

  • Speeding, measured against road limits.
  • Harsh acceleration, which raises fuel use and engine strain.
  • Harsh braking, which wears tyres and brakes.
  • Cornering, where turning too fast is unsafe.
  • Idling, where a stationary engine wastes fuel.

Each event feeds a driver safety score and a fleet-wide league table, so managers see best and worst performers at a glance.

How It Works

Four steps, running continuously:

  1.     Capture: a device in each vehicle records GPS position, speed and accelerometer data.
  2.     Score: software rates each journey against the five KPIs.
  3.     Alert: an in-cab audible buzzer warns the driver the moment they brake, accelerate or corner too harshly.
  4.     Report: managers review scores, scorecards and league tables on the portal and Manager App.

Key Features

  •     Real-time in-cab audible alerts that correct harsh or distracted driving as it happens.
  •     Driver safety scoring across five KPIs, with best and worst rankings.
  •     Driver league table that makes performance visible and rewards careful driving.
  •     Journey Playback with colour-coded speeding and idling events.
  •     Scorecards and scheduled reports for coaching and reviews.
  •     Desktop portal, Manager App and Driver app.
  •     Optional SmartCam 4G dash cam for video evidence and AI cabin detection.

Benefits of Driver Behaviour Monitoring for Fleet Managers

Improves public and driver safety

reducing unsafe driving behaviour such as harsh braking, unsafe manoeuvres, speeding, and poor driving, resulting in fewer road traffic incidents, violations, and fines.

Reduces vehicle maintenance costs

fewer speeding instances and improvements in driver behaviour reduces wear and tear.

Reduces fuel costs

a reduction in harsh acceleration, braking, and idling also improves fuel efficiency, while the driver monitoring system allows fleet managers to better monitor fuel waste from inefficient driving practices.

Identify and reward careful driving

driver league tables give fleet managers instant visibility over driver behaviour, enabling them to identify and reward careful driving and manage and improve dangerous driving.

Why Driver Behaviour Monitoring Matters

Driving for work is a workplace risk, not just a cost. The Health and Safety Executive estimates that more than a quarter of road traffic incidents may involve someone driving for work, and RoSPA links at-work driving to more than 500 deaths a year, almost a third of all UK road deaths. A monitoring system gives you the evidence to manage that duty of care rather than hope for the best.

Proven Results

Carlisle Support Services cut insurance premiums by 34 per cent and saved more than £100,000 in the first year on Crystal Ball’s SmartCam platform. “Crystal Ball’s award-winning SmartCam 4G system provides everything and more that Carlisle needs to run a safe, compliant and cost-effective fleet.” (Debbie Blantern, Procurement and Fleet Manager, Carlisle Support Services).

Independent data agrees. The Energy Saving Trust documents a telematics rollout at G4S that cut idle time by 43 per cent, reduced CO2 by two tonnes a year and lifted driver safety scores by 66 per cent. Crystal Ball customer Trojan Crates saved 3,822 litres of fuel in a year, worth £4,777.50. See the fleet tracking ROI benchmark for the full breakdown.

Add Video Evidence With SmartCam

Pair driver behaviour data with video using SmartCam, Crystal Ball’s 4G dash cam on the same platform. Forward-facing and optional driver-facing cameras, with AI that detects distracted driving, mobile phone use, yawning and smoking. Event Metrics show the g-forces around an incident, and footage supports coaching and faster insurance claims.

Legal and GDPR Compliant

Legal and GDPR Compliant

Monitoring how employees drive for work is lawful in the UK under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, provided you are transparent and proportionate. ICO guidance says tell drivers the nature, extent and reasons for monitoring, and use the least intrusive method that meets your aim. Start from Crystal Ball’s fleet dashcam policy and GDPR template.

Why UK Fleets Choose Crystal Ball

Crystal Ball has monitored UK fleets for more than 15 years, operating from Manchester since 2005. Its trackers are Thatcham-approved, it is recognised as a Top 100 Trusted Brand in Fleet, it holds an Innovation in Telematics award, and it is rated 4.9 out of 5 from more than 127 Google reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

Crystal Ball scores drivers against five KPIs: speeding, harsh acceleration, harsh braking, cornering and idling. Those events combine into a driver safety score and a fleet league table.

Yes, under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, provided you have a lawful basis, are transparent with drivers and keep monitoring proportionate. Most employers rely on legitimate interests.

Yes. ICO guidance requires you to tell workers the nature, extent and reasons for monitoring before it begins, normally in a written privacy notice.

It can. Insurers recognise the lower risk of a monitored, Thatcham-approved fleet. Carlisle Support Services achieved a 34% reduction in premiums within a year.

Driver behaviour monitoring scores how a vehicle is driven from GPS and accelerometer data. A dash cam adds video and, with SmartCam, AI cabin detection. Crystal Ball combines both on one platform.

Yes. Driver Behaviour is an optional bolt-on to the FleetTracker GPS tracking system, priced by quote based on your fleet.
